Meg and Les

This is me and my dad. He was driving my mom nuts last week when we were at my grandmother's place so I distracted him by snapping photos of the two of us. It worked for a few minutes, at least.

This was the best photo of the lot. It's hard to get a good self portrait when you're leaning in to take it with someone else in another chair. Oh well.

  1. I don't know. My mom thinks that when he gets up in the middle of the night he often falls down. She has the bathtub edge covered with a towel and tries to cushion other things she thinks he might fall on, but he still ends up with bumps and bruises.

He often doesn't notice when he's hurt himself, either. I wonder if somehow the Picks particles affect nervous system behavior as well.

And you can't just ask him what happened. He hasn't a clue.

  2. That's a bummer. You can't even take precautions if you don't know how he's hurting himself. That really sucks.

  3. I suppose you could set up a bunch of motion-activated cameras around the house, and "Just Hit Rewind"...

What do you mean by "Picks PARTICLES"?

    Aloha mai Nai`a.

  4. yeah, yeah. whatever. they screw up his brain. that's all that matters.

gee, that wasn't a very info. laden entry for a wikipedia article.

  5. Well, most of the info was in the main article on Pick's.

  6. which really wasn't a whole lot longer. especially when compared to the alzheimers entry. :-P

i'm sure once a few famous people are diagnosed with picks, though, the entry will grow. (or maybe when my picks movie becomes a youtube-style hit. *sigh* of course i'd rather not have had a reason to make a picks movie at all.)

  8. there WAS some famous dancer who had Pick's and noticed something was wrong when his balance was off--couldn't do 10 bajillion rotations while pirouetting anymore

  9. and the dancer's name was?...

the only "famous" person i've ever heard of with Picks was the doctor that carved a "Z" into a woman's stomach after performing a C-section. he figured he had done such good work that he should sign it. he was later diagnosed with Picks. (i hope that's the link i wanted. i've noticed that my connectivity is sorely lacking after 11. it happened yesterday, too. weird.)

  12. i've heard stories (i think edgar allan poe wrote one of them, though i don't really remember as i'm not a poe fan) where the men in a family all go crazy when they hit a certain age. (something in their 40s or 50s.) it's sounds a lot like picks to me. it's really your personality that goes first and you do weird stuff. my dad definitely had the "absent minded professor" thing going on there for awhile. not just in terms of forgetting but his odd behaviors.

  13. It sounds like it would make a good scary story topic. I wonder how many folks in the past were afflicted with Picks-like diseases that people mistook for being possession by demons and the like...

  14. demon possession is more likely to have been associated with turets or something like that.

part of the problem with picks is that you really think the person is just being a jerk. there's no indication that anything is wrong with them, unless you know them well enough to know that they're acting differently than they used to.

for example, we went to a russian restaurant in SF once. there was a sign that said, "no dancing in the lower level" (which is where we were). dad immediately proceeded to dance the hopok. no one would think of that as demon possession or even a sickness. everyone just assumed he was being incredibly rude and was happy about it.

that's part of what makes it so much harder to be the care-taker of someone with picks. the person himself/herself doesn't have a clue anything is wrong. so they're really well off compared to dementia victims who are cognizant enough to know that things aren't right. but people would get really mad at dad (and therefore at us, since we were with him) because of things he'd do. and since he doesn't look sick, they think he did the things deliberately.
